The Japan-America Society of Northwest Florida will usher in the “Year of the Tiger” with its 28th annual Japanese New Year Celebration on Sat., Jan. 22, 2022, at the SCI Building in downtown Pensacola.
Due to the recent spike of Covid cases, this year’s event will be a free outdoor concert. The popular Matsuriza taiko drummers from Orlando, who regularly entertain at the Japan pavilion in Walt Disney World’s Epcot, will perform three sets between noon and 3 p.m. There will also be vendors selling Japanese food and crafts. Japan-America Society members will be eligible for prize drawings, including five $40 gift certificates courtesy of Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse.
Limited outdoor seating will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or picnic blanket.
This free concert is sponsored by the Japan-America Society of Northwest Florida, Bodacious Shops, Laverne and Dick Baker, and Kyoto Japanese Steakhouse. Donations and memberships help JAS continue its mission of fostering and promoting stronger ties of friendship and understanding between the U.S. and Japan. The SCI Building is located at 220 W. Garden St. in downtown Pensacola. For more information or to become a JAS member, visit jasnwfl.org or email info@jasnwfl.org.
